Down comforters: at the top of the list for comfort

Down comforters make the long, cold winter nights much more comfy! Goose down is soft and ever so fluffy as well as a great insulator. These comforters are a bedding favorite for many years past.

If you want the comfort of down, you will pay a price for it. The more pure down that's in the comforter, the more costly it will be. You'll find that small feathers will make up the balance of the fill so that the price will be more reasonable. The cost of down is quite a bit more than the less expensive comforters like polyester.

Comforters created with nylon or other fillers may bunch and create a lumpy surface after a period of use, and will not allow your body to breathe like down will. Down is not a material that you simply toss into a large industrial washer and wash and dry.

This can ruin your comforter investment. Professional cleaning periodically is the only correct way to care for your down investment. However, since comforters are the top of the bedding, they do not become dirty like sheets that need weekly cleaning.

In fact, the largest part of the year, the comforter will be removed from the bed or folded back before sleeping. This means that you'll only have to have that comforter cleaned every 4 or 5 years.

This is only true if you care for the bedding by not spilling things on it, and use a nice quality duvet cover too. =) You'll find that comforters made with down fill are available in light, medium and heavy weights to accommodate differing climates, so you can tailor your choice of comforter to how warm and heavy you'd like your cover to be. Generally speaking, look for fill power numbers in the following numbers:

close to 600 is good

close to 700 is better

at 700 or more is the best, with 800 or more being rare and very expensive

•When purchasing a comforter with down, be sure to look for top quality stitching. It should say box stitching or baffle box stitching. This means that there are channels sewn into the comforter that will prevent the down and feathers from shifting and getting lumps, which are unsightly and uncomfortable!

•The fabric of which the comforter is made should be heavy and closely woven- so look for thread counts of at least 200. This also prevents the down from “leaking” through the fabric over time. A less expensive, loosely woven material will allow down and feathers to poke through the fabric and you do not want this problem. Again, you get what you pay for, every single time.

So buy top quality when buying down products for your comforters. The color and pattern choices in comforters filled with down is virtually limitless! Any bedroom theme can be enhanced with a comforter of down by simply shopping for solids, prints or patterns to coordinate or contrast the other colors.

Online shopping allows you to sit at home and view comforters with down filling from all over the world- and you can even locate discounted comforters online. It may be difficult to settle on just one!
